Usenet clients are capable of retrieving huge amounts of news and they enable you to sort and organize your articles fast and easy. This is what you can do with Xnews. If you have a Usenet account, this lightweight application will collect, decode and store any news articles.

Xnews is offered as a freeware application. It comes in a 696 KB archive and all you need to do is extract its files and run the executable. There is no need to go through an installation process and you don't need to set up additional tools or services. Furthermore, the software works with any Windows version, from Win 95 to Win 7.

When you launch the application for the first time, it will prompt you for a Usenet server address and it will display a tabbed menu, on which you can make further configurations. Besides specifying the server's port and typing in your username and password, you may also customize one or more identities and choose different colors for the main interface. Furthermore, you can make various sorting and threading configurations, set the program to show or hide specific headers in the article viewer, select storage folders and much more.

Once you are done configuring your Usenet server, the software will retrieve your newsgroups right away, without taking too long. You can view your groups, their contents, your own created folders, archives and queues, on separate tabs. The software places various searching and filtering functions at your disposal, so you can locate a specific group or article instantly.

If you access a group, you will find its articles listed on the upper half of the interface and you may read the articles themselves on the lower half. You can use numerous options, while exploring a group, to convert everything to raw text, reply to a newsgroup or follow it up. You can also send a selected article to a created archive folder. You can find many other useful options, directly on the interface or in the top menus. Xnews allows you to save individual articles, in TXT, RTF or HTML format, post on news groups, forward articles by email and much more.

Pros

Xnews is lightweight, free and you don't need to install it. It can retrieve numerous news groups in less than a minute. The software allows you to sort your articles in different folders, forward them by email and more.

Cons

The large number of options may discourage inexperienced users. With Xnews, all the news you need is just a few clicks away and you may retrieve them in a matter of seconds.
